I am running 2 Oil painting workshops in May for anyone interested in building their confidence in oils.
These workshops will be based at The Rye Creative Centre where we have a lovely art room with lots of natural light. The 2 workshops will focus on different elements of landscape painting which means you can benefit from both or just one.
You will need to bring your own paints, palette, brushes and solvents of which I will supply a list below if you do not already have them. there will be easels and I will supply panels for you to paint on unless you prefer canvas or paper. You will need to bring a pack lunch and we will break at 12.30 ,there will be plenty of tea coffee and biscuits to keep you going throughout the day.
As the weather warms up I plan some plein air painting workshops at different locations in the area. Let me know if there’s somewhere you would love to paint.
Workshop 1 Coastal
4th May
10am-3.30pm £75
How the day will run
Bring along a coastal image of your choice or one from my own collection I can email to you.
1. Planning your coastal painting with small sketches or thumbnails
2 We will then start with a Tonal painting of your chosen image to learn about the importance of Tonal Value in painting . For this we are just using one colour with white ideally a dark colour, burnt sienna or black which will allow us to see where the very darkest, the mid tones and lightest areas of our scene are before moving into colour . We will paint this together.
3. We will then look at the colour wheel and the complementary colours that help create harmony in your painting . After some small colour studies the afternoon will be spent painting independently with my help and advice.
We will end the day with a little discussion about the work.
Workshop 2 Countryside
18th May
10am-3.30 pm £75
How the day will run
Bring along a countryside image of your choice or I can email you a choice from my collection of references.
1. We’ll start with your set up
Your materials, paints, mediums and surfaces to paint on. I paint on my own prepared gessoed boards for smaller works and and will provide everyone with one of these to work on for the day. You are welcome to bring a canvas or paper if you prefer. No larger than A4
2, Planning your landscape painting.
we will discuss what makes an interesting painting looking at some examples and how to make small thumbnails to help with design, breaking down your scene into just 4 or 5 large shapes.
3 . Selecting your colour palette for landscape, colour mixing and how to work from thin to thick and from dark to light for the best results.
I will demo at each stage to help you understand the process. I anticipate everyone working independently throughout the afternoon with my help when needed.
We will finish the day with a little discussion about the work.
Materials you will need.
I’m obviously happy for you to bring along any paints and brushes and solvents/mediums you already use as long as they are roughly based on the selection below.
Please include a sketch pad and pencil

Winton range is good to start with or the Jacksons own
you can buy starter packs with slightly less range but thats fine , just email for any advice if you need it.

Brushes and palette knife
I recommend just a small selection of brushes to start. If you are local you can buy these in ArtWrite Rye
A large flat size 8 or 10
A smaller flat size 6
and a couple of small rounds size 2 and 4
1 basic small palette knife size 3 or 4 for mixing and a palette for mixing on.

Medium/solvent
For these workshops I will just be using a low odour solvent for thinning paint contained in a brush washer or if you are using water based oils you will only need water. You can use a good screw top jar for your solvent or buy a special airtight brush washer/pot or dippers which clip onto your palette, links for both below or you can purchase from Artwrite Rye. A workshop designed to improve your confidence in oil painting with a coastal scene as your reference. The morning will focus on design and tonal studies and in the afternoon you’ll be painting your scene with demos and help throughout the day.
